How to Build a Life You Don’t Need to Escape From

Do you sometimes sit & daydream about ways to escape the hard work, effort, & grind of the everyday reality you’re faced with?

If so, it might mean it’s time to build a life that you don’t have to escape from! :)

Speaking for myself personally, there’ve been many times in life when things were hard or just weren’t going well when I would daydream about what it would be like to escape from it all, such as…

  • the soul-sucking career I was in during my 20’s when I was climbing the corporate ladder & struggling with burnout.
  • the physical, mental & emotional pain I experienced during my 30’s when my burnout came to a head & I was going through a midlife crisis & dark night of the soul.
  • the unhappy marriage & relationship I experienced in my 40’s when I was trying to figure out how to be healthy & secure in relationship.
  • and many other moments throughout life!

I mean let’s face it, dear one…

Sometimes life can be difficult & hard to navigate, am I right?!

That said, I truly believe that it IS possible to build & create a life that you don’t need to escape from that also allows you to thrive in ALL areas of life! :)

In fact, I’ve learned a LOT over the years from various mentors about how to learn from my mistakes, find balance, fill in what’s missing & tap into my deepest dreams & desires.

In fact, one of my mentors (who was a quantum physicist & buddhist monk who knew a thing or two about life) taught me in my mid-30’s a few simple questions that I could use to quickly assess & correct what’s not working in my life which I’d like to share with you today.

Take a moment & ask yourself the following questions…

  1. On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being extraordinary) how would rate your life right currently?
  2. What, if anything, is missing?
  3. What do you REALLY want?
  4. What’s the #1 thing you can do to fill in what’s missing or create what you desire?

If you’re like most of the people & clients I’ve asked these questions of over the years, what’s missing & what we really desire are usually the juicier aspects of our lives that we’ve de-valued or de-prioritized for one reason or another!

Why is it that we tend to de-prioritize or de-value the juiciness of life?

In my own personal experience & in my work with the clients I’ve worked with over the years, the primary reason we de-value these parts of our life has to due with programming & conditioning that tells us what to believe such as…

“I’ve got to work hard for my money.”
“There’s not enough time in the day to have fun or play.”
“Rest will make me look lazy.”
“I have to prove my worth through my productivity.”
“I won’t be a good parent if I’m not always there for my kids.”
“I can’t rest until I have things perfect or just right.”
“I feel guilty for wanting to take care of myself when there are others to take care of.”
Etc…

In fact, we all have stories we tell ourselves that prevent us from experiencing the yummy, juicy, exciting parts of our life such as living on purpose, things that bring us passion & joy, relationships that allows to experience embodied pleasure & all of fun, playful & adventurous things that usually go by the wayside!

Can you relate, dear one?

If so, I promise you are not alone!

The good news is that if you make a commitment to regularly & consistently fill in what’s missing & fulfill your desires, you can in fact turn all of this around & build a life you don’t want to escape from that includes more fulfillment, purpose & balance!

In fact, when you set clear goals, pursue your passions, maintain meaningful relationships, prioritize self-care & embrace gratitude you can slowly begin to fill in what’s missing & begin to nurture & foster a more positive outlook on life.

Remember, life is a journey & small steps each day can lead to a more fulfilling life in the long run! :)

With this in mind, I encourage you to ask yourself the questions I asked of you regularly & to actively take brave-hearted action to fill in what’s missing in your life.

After all… we only live once (theoretically), am I right?! :)
