Is It Burnout… Or A Midlife Rite of Passage?

Is It Burnout… Or A Midlife Rite of Passage?

If your body was asking for a new rhythm… would you be willing to listen?

There comes a season in every woman’s life where our capacity to handle everything we used goes down and we start to realize we just aren’t capable of “doing” all that we once could.

We beat ourselves up and wonder what happened to the modern-day wonder woman we once were.

And although a lot of what we’re experiencing is sociological, generational and patriarchal in nature… it’s also biological.

Menopause… A Rite of Passage

Midlife ushers in profound hormonal and neurological shifts during perimenopause and beyond that can greatly impact how we think, feel, work, and relate to stress.

As estrogen, progesterone and testosterone begins to fluctuate (and eventually decline), it affects:

  • Nervous system regulation
  • Stress tolerance
  • Sleep cycles
  • Cognitive clarity
  • Emotional resilience
  • Energy metabolism
  • Sexual desire

Estrogen, in particular, plays a key role in serotonin and dopamine production — the very neurochemicals that support mood stability, motivation, and focus.

So when levels change, women may experience symptoms that look and feel a lot like burnout… even when they haven’t changed their workload.

Common overlapping symptoms include:

  • Chronic fatigue or energy crashes
  • Brain fog or forgetfulness
  • Irritability or mood swings
  • Loss of motivation
  • Anxiety or overwhelm
  • Sleep disruption
  • Feeling emotionally raw or depleted
  • Decreased capacity for stress
  • Resentment or withdrawal

When you combine decades of self-sacrificing, over-functioning, and caring for everyone else with the biological shifts… it often feels like a breaking point.

But here’s the thing…

You’re not a failure and you’re not broken. 💔

This period of life is actually a sacred rite of passage that all women (with a uterus) will eventually go through.

Because of the hormonal changes and shifts taking place, your body is asking for a new way of living — one that is more nourished, regulated, and resourced.

The good news?

Now more than ever there is a LOT of new research, expertise and support being made available to help you navigate this transition with ease.

My own personal transition into post-menopause has included HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and changes in diet, exercise, supplementation, and stress management practices – that have made a world of difference in how I live, lead and work.

What once felt like I was falling apart, I now look at as a celebration of connection with myself and an initiation into wise womanhood. 👩

And I want to invite you to do the same…

When you take responsibility for educating yourself on how to biologically navigate your way through this sacred time, you’re life will change for the better!

This is exactly why I’ve invited my very special friend and guest expert, Cindi Buenzli-Gertz, to talk about perimenopause during this month’s online Self-Rescue Wisdom Circle inside the Brave-Hearted Sisterhood.

She specializes in menopausal education and support and will be guiding us through:

– What’s actually happening in the female body during midlife
– How hormonal shifts impact burnout symptoms
– Practical ways to support your nervous system and energy
– How to advocate for your health and well-being

This is a powerful opportunity to learn and understand what your body might be asking for… instead of judging yourself for “not handling life like you used to.”

To support this, you’re warmly invited to join us online on Wednesday, 2/18 from 12 – 1 pm MT! 👯‍♀️

There is no cost to attend — simply respond back to this email with the word “UNPAUSED” and I’ll send you the details for how to join.

Be sure to bring your questions, your curiosity, and your beautiful brave heart!

Because self-rescue isn’t just emotional or psychological…

It’s biological too. 👩‍🔬

And if you’re unable to join us that day, here are a few additional resources from one of my favorite menopausal educators, Dr. Mary Claire Haver, on how to demystify the challenges of menopause…
