Have you ever felt like you were stuck in the muck or operating like a zombie on auto-pilot? đ§ââď¸
If youâre checking boxes, doing whatâs expected, staying busyâbut deep down inside youâre not truly directing life the way youâd like to be, you might be drifting in a way that requires a self-rescue!
Napoleon Hill describes drifting in his book Outwitting the Devil as a state of mind where we allow outside influences, fear, or habit to control our thoughts and decisions.
When we drift, we move through life aimlesslyâwithout a clear sense of direction or purpose.
According to Hill, drifting is how the âDevilâ (a metaphor for fear and mediocrity) takes control of our minds, keeping us from our highest potential. đ
If drifting is showing up for you, here are a few ways it might be presenting itselfâŚ
- Feeling stuck in routines that donât light you up.
- Saying yes to things out of obligation instead of desire.
- Feeling tired, unmotivated, or like youâve lost touch with what matters most.
- Playing small, procrastinating or waiting for âsomedayâ to arrive.
- Operating from a place of fear, doubt or uncertainty.
At the end of the day, drifting is what happens when we become disconnected from our desires, distracted by othersâ needs, or too exhausted to pause long enough to ask ourselves what we really want.
And for many purpose-driven women, especially those used to giving, serving, or achieving, itâs easy to slip into this pattern without even realizing it.
After all, weâve been taught to be dependable, capable, and selflessâbut not to listen to our inner compass. đ§
In fact, many of us spend years being who others need us to be, and then wonder why we feel stuck, lost, or uninspired.
But hereâs the good newsâŚ
Thereâs a relatively simple antidote to drifting and feeling stuck!
It involves reconnecting and aligning with your desires, your values, and your purpose so you can consciously design and create a life that nourishes you⌠from the inside out.
You donât need to push harder or âfigure it all out.â
You simply need to pause long enough to get honest with yourself by asking yourself the following questionsâŚ
- Where am I going through the motions instead of being fully engaged?
- What parts of my lifefeel heavy, uninspired, or disconnected from who I truly am?
- What am I cravingâemotionally, creatively, spirituallyâthat Iâve been ignoring?
Answering these questions will help you recreate the spark of clarity you need to shift from drifting to deliberate, purposeful living.
Itâs actually not about doing moreâitâs about remembering who you are and what lights you up. đŤ
To support you in getting unstuck, here are a few practical ways to begin reconnect with your purpose:
- Create space for self-reflection and assessment. Turn off distractions and give yourself time each weekâmaybe even 15 minutesâto journal, meditate, or simply breathe and notice how you feel. Space is where clarity lives.
- Remember and reconnect with your desires. Make a list of what genuinely excites or energizes you. Donât filter it by whatâs practical or possibleâjust name what you want. Your desires are divine breadcrumbs leading you back to your purpose.
- Align your actions with your truth. Each day, ask: âWhatâs one small action that moves me closer to what feels most alive and true for me?â Drifting happens in autopilot; alignment happens through conscious choice.
- Surround yourself with support. Itâs hard to stay aligned when youâre surrounded by people or systems that encourage you to self-sacrifice. Find community with others who are walking the path of growth and authenticityâbecause alignment thrives in connection.
When you begin to live in alignment with your truth, life stops feeling like something thatâs âhappening to youâ and starts feeling like something youâre co-creating.
In fact, the women I work with often realize that what they thought was burnout, overwhelm, or lack of motivation was actually a symptom of disconnectionâfrom their inner voice, their body, and their true desires.
When they reconnect with that deeper truth, they rediscover their sparkâand life begins to flow again with ease, joy, and purpose.
This is exactly why I created the Brave Life Experience Retreat happening at Joyful Journey Hot Springs & Spa the first weekend in December (12/3-12/7).
Not only will it provide attendees with ample time for rest and relaxation, there will be soulful self-discovery with other amazing women to identify where you might be stuck (or drifting) AND to reconnect you to the dreams and desires that will motivate you into action and light your soul on fire. đĽ
